A Bit of Summer on Film

It's been a while since I've updated! Tim and I moved from Philadelphia back to Chicago last month. We're getting into the swing of our new life in the city. I've started back up full time at Columbia, so I've been quite busy this last week. But I thought I'd share a few shots my sister and I took a few weeks ago. I'll be back soon with an update on Chicago life!

Sunrise

Yesterday Kylie and I woke up at 4AM for a sunrise photo session. I had envisioned thick fog covering an endless expanse of bright green cornfields. It wasn't a foggy morning, but we found a gorgeous location near a soybean field with the purple-pink sky changing colors as the sun rose behind us. It was magical. We met before dawn with tired eyes and our cameras and Mexican blankets and floral crowns in tow. I brought along a massive cup of iced coffee as we drove around, scouting locations. We listened to music and chatted easily about the past and the future. Once we found a spot, we hopped out and took photos with my 35mm camera from the 70s and a few digital photos as well. Here are some of my favorite digital shots. I'll share the 35mm photos once they're all developed.

We agreed to have as many photoshoots as possible before she and her little family move south to their new hometown. It will be so difficult to have over 1,000 miles of fields and small towns and highways between us. I'm soaking up these last few weeks of quality time with my best friend.

my film photography collection

i was recently inspired by a post from Steffys Pros and Cons to share some of my lomography collection.
over the years, my sister and i have become quite engulfed in collecting vintage cameras.

this is our most recent collection:


as you can tell, we love experimenting with film.
there's something so magical about it that digital photos can't touch.
i know there are lots of apps and photoshop effects that mimick the vintage look,
but nothing can compare to real film photographs.

and it's so fun to not know what the photos will look like until they're developed.

like the last photo was a self-portrait i look about 4 years ago.
i initially wanted to get totally different shot.
i framed the shot (i thought i at least included my entire jacket!), snapped the photo,
and watched as a suuuuper close up of my face started to emerge.
initally, i was kind of annoyed that i had to try it again.
but as the photo developed more, i realized how wonderful it looked!
and it's now my all-time favorite self portrait.

so, there you have it.
there are some things that can only be done with film.

ps. our wedding was featured on "Wedding Chicks"!!! Eeeeek! I'm so excited about this. Even though it's almost a year after our wedding, I finally thought to submitted our wedding to a blog - and we made the cut!! Hip hip hooray!

i've been wanting to do a photoshoot inspired by clotheslines for aaaages now.
once it gets warmer, i want to take my sister and her husband out to a field somewhere at dusk, and let the dreaminess begin!

i've been dreaming of it for a while now.

i want the lighting and scenery to be like this.
these were engagement photos of my sister when we were in new zealand.
we just went out one evening with our film camera to the local park, jumped over a little fence,
and snapped some photos to celebrate their recent engagement.

i can't wait to start this project!
since indiana won't break away from these sub-zero temps, i think i've got a little while to go.
in the meantime, i'll probably start collecting pretty white fabric.
maybe some lace and embroidered details for the sun to catch!
